3 Dishes Restaurant Review: Planet Thai

| October 1, 2013 | 0 Comments

3_dishesI will be honest with you, before living in Beaverton, I was a little skeptical to try Thai food. Not that I am afraid to try new things but my old hometown had only one Thai restaurant and I was not sure how good they were so I never ventured there. In Beaverton, however, there are a slew of Thai spots to choose from. In this case, I visited Planet Thai, located near where the new city hall is being constructed. Planet Thai’s décor is modern, clean, with Asian accents. The view of the kitchen is visible to its customers displaying the hustle and bustle of the crew. Greeted with friendly service, these were the dishes they served to me:

Dish 1: Ginger Cod (Price: $15.00)

12.1-Ginger Cod (1 of 1) copyThe first dish was crispy cod filets, topped with green onion, mushrooms, cilantro, julienne red peppers and a special red wine sauce. The first thing that I experienced with this dish was how fresh the cod tasted, crispy and delicate. The veggies had a nice crunch while the wine sauce added that extra bit of moisture and flavor to bring this dish together.

Dish 2: Kabocha Curry (Price: $14.50)

12.2-Kabocha Curry (1 of 1)I think the word ‘curry’ can scare people from trying dishes served with it. Curry can come in all sorts of colors and tastes. This incarnation was a red curry sauce, served with grilled shrimp, scallops, kabocha (Asian squash), broccoli, carrots, bell peppers and basil. The scallops and shrimp are tender and cooked just right. The curry sauce is spicy, smooth and sweet while the kabocha tastes like a cross of a carrot and potato. Very unique. This would be a perfect dish on a cold, rainy night.

Dish 3: Crab Pot Thai (Price: $14.50)

12.3-Crab pad Thai (1 of 1) copyThis third dish is prepared with stir-fry noodles…with egg, bean sprouts, onions and chopped peanuts in a tangy tamarind sauce and topped with fresh crab. It is sweet and sour, thanks to the tamarind, and salty from the crab (in a good way; as if you are smelling the ocean mist). This is a fun meal to eat with chopsticks, which I recommend.

The great thing about these meals is that they are served ‘family-style’ which I would suggest that you order more than one of these dishes so everyone can sample each one. I felt spoiled, I must admit. Three seafood dishes! I adore the ocean’s offerings and Planet Thai delivered. They come prepared having plucked top chefs from top Thai destinations to work here. Sao, the partner and head chef is a beast in the kitchen!

I must, again, bring up the top-notch service. It seemed like every staff member was attentive to the needs of the restaurant’s customers, not just mine. As a former restaurant manager, I tend to pay attention to these notes of detail when I am dining. I have always felt that great food paired with substandard service makes for a crummy meal. This was not the case here.

Khob khun (Thank You)!
